Although several fans & critics call for his music "New Age", Matthew Yanni himself has distanced himself from that label. Inside his autobiography, Yanni devotes an entire chapter to the subject, stating that he prefers to call for his music "contemporary instrumental."

Early inside his life, Yanni tried to forge the career within rock and roll, touring sustaining locally popular elastic in the Midwest United States while a student at a University of Minnesota.
